Over the years we have seen patients who had concerns about double vision. Brain scans came back negative and despite seeing other eye care specialists, these patients experienced no relief. Our evaluation typically finds the cause of their symptoms is due to previously undiagnosed eye coordination problem, convergence insufficiency. Please note that this was not a problem that eyeglasses would help.
When a someone is struggling with performance issues such as headaches or double vision with no sign of disease, this is something that optometrists with specialized training in vision development and vision rehabilitation treat routinely as it is more of a functional vision disorder. It is important to note, most children don’t complain when they are seeing double because they think it is normal and they may not describe it as double; sometimes it may seem blurry to them or like there is a ‘ghost’ image. However, they will complain after a head injury (or multiple bumps to the head) if they are noticing difficulties with their visionwhich did not exist prior to the injury. In addition, double vision is also very common after a head injury or stroke in adults.
